Sow after the last frost when soil is warm, or start indoors 4 weeks early.

Planting details

• Choose a site with full sun and airflow
• Spacing: 9 to 12 inches
• Seed depth: about 1/4 inch

Growing requirements

Zinnias bloom best in full sun and well-drained soil. Deadhead spent flowers for a tidier display and continued bloom.

Harvesting and care

Cut stems for bouquets when blooms are fully open, cutting deep to encourage new side shoots. Water at the base to keep foliage dry.

Common mistakes

• Overhead watering, which can encourage powdery mildew on leaves
• Crowded spacing, which reduces the airflow plants need to stay clean
• Rich soil and heavy feeding, which favor foliage over flowers

Zinnias attract pollinators and can border vegetables without competing for much root space.
