Planting tomatoes

Start tomatoes indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the expected last frost. Move them outside after frost risk has passed, nights are reliably mild, and the soil has begun to warm.

• Spacing: 18 to 24 inches for many supported plants
• Seed depth: about 1/4 inch

Growing requirements

Choose the sunniest position available. Tomatoes grow best with consistent moisture and well-drained soil. Irregular watering can split fruit and can contribute to blossom-end rot when calcium uptake is disrupted.

Companion plants

Basil, carrots, onions, and parsley can share a garden area with tomatoes when each plant still receives enough light and root space. Spacing and airflow matter more than a simple companion list.
