Growing requirements

Hostas are the default answer for shade, happiest in part to full shade with moist, rich soil. Blue-leaf types keep their color in deeper shade, while gold types want a little morning sun.

Harvesting and care

Cut foliage to the ground after frost blackens it. Divide crowded clumps in spring as the tips emerge, or leave them alone, since hostas stay healthy undisturbed for years.

Common mistakes

• Planting in hot afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves
• Ignoring slugs in spring, which shreds new growth
• Burying the crown too deep, which invites rot

Companion plants

Hostas fill the ground under trees and along north walls with ferns and astilbe. Keep them away from deer paths, where they become a salad bar.
