Planting watermelons

Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soil is warm. Short-season types suit northern gardens.

• Give each hill 36 to 60 inches; vines run far
• Use black plastic or dark mulch to warm soil in cool climates
• Seed depth: about 1 inch

Growing requirements

Watermelons need full sun, heat, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Keep moisture steady early, then ease off as fruit ripens for better flavor.

Harvesting and care

Ripe fruit sounds hollow when tapped, the underside turns creamy yellow, and the nearest tendril dries brown. Cut, do not pull, melons from the vine.

Common mistakes

• Guessing ripeness by size alone, which leads to bland melons
• Heavy watering as fruit ripens, which dilutes sugar
• Planting too close, which limits airflow and fruit size

Companion plants

Plant along the edge of the garden where vines can spill outward, or near corn. Give melons room rather than interplanting tightly.
