Planting daffodils
Plant bulbs in fall, two to four weeks before the ground freezes, pointed end up at about three times the bulb's height. They need winter cold to bloom.

Growing requirements
Daffodils need full sun to light shade and soil that drains in spring. Their big advantage is chemical: the bulbs are toxic, so deer, rabbits, and voles leave them alone.
Harvesting and care
Deadhead spent blooms but leave the foliage until it yellows, about six weeks, since it rebuilds the bulb for next year. Lift and divide crowded clumps when bloom counts drop.
Common mistakes
- Braiding or cutting green foliage, which starves next year's flowers
- Planting in soggy spots, which rots the bulbs
- Forgetting the bulbs are toxic around pets that dig
Companion plants
Daffodils naturalize under trees and between later perennials like hostas, whose summer foliage covers the yellowing bulb leaves.
