Planting snapdragons

Start indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost; plants tolerate light frost and can go out a few weeks early. In mild climates, plant in fall for spring bloom.

• Pinch seedlings to encourage branching
• Spacing: 6 to 12 inches depending on height class
• Seed needs light; press into the surface without covering

Growing requirements

Snapdragons bloom best in cool weather with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. They pause in summer heat and often rebloom as fall cools.

Harvesting and care

Cut spikes when the lower third of florets are open; they last a week or more in a vase. Deadheading keeps side shoots producing.

Common mistakes

• Covering seed, which prevents germination since it needs light
• Sowing too late for spring bloom in hot climates
• Skipping the pinch on seedlings, which gives single weak spikes
