Planting carrots

Sow directly as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.

Planting details

• Thin seedlings to 2 to 3 inches
• Sow again every 2 to 3 weeks for succession
• Seed depth: about 1/4 inch

Growing requirements

Use loose, stone-free soil so roots can develop evenly. Keep the seedbed consistently moist until emergence.

Harvesting and care

Pull carrots when shoulders reach usable size, loosening the soil with a fork if roots resist. Twist off tops before storing so greens do not draw out moisture.

Common mistakes

• Skipping thinning, which produces twisted, undersized roots
• Fresh manure or rich fertilizer, which causes forked and hairy roots
• Letting the seedbed dry during the slow germination window

Companion plants

Lettuce, radishes, and onions can fit well near carrots without creating dense shade.
