Planting peas

Sow directly 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost, as soon as the soil can be worked. In mild climates a fall crop can go in during late summer.

• Install a trellis at planting time for vining types
• Seed depth: about 1 inch
• Pea inoculant can improve germination in new beds

Growing requirements

Peas grow best in cool weather with full sun and steady moisture. Warm soil and hot days end flowering quickly, so getting the timing right matters more than fertilizer.

Harvesting and care

Pick pods every day or two once they fill out. At season end, cut vines at the soil line and leave the roots in place to release their fixed nitrogen.

Common mistakes

• Sowing too late, which pushes flowering into summer heat
• Skipping support for vining varieties, which tangles plants and invites mildew
• Letting pods toughen on the vine, which tells the plant to stop producing

Companion plants

Carrots, radishes, lettuce, and spinach share the same cool window. Keep peas away from onions and garlic.
